Plywood Lounge Chair with Wood Legs
Inspired by the Best Design of the 20th Century
During WWII, husband and wife team, Charles & Ray made some important discoveries during their commissioned work by the US Navy. Their development of plywood goods such as splints and stretchers served as inspiration for revolutionary furniture they would design after the war. Charles was quoted as saying that "recognizing the need is the primary condition for design", and in recognizing the need for stylish, obtainable furniture for the masses, during post-war suburban expansion, Charles & Ray were on the cusp of something BIG. After years of experimentation with bentwood, the husband and wife team introduced the "Molded Plywood Lounge Chair Wood Base" (aka "LCW"), which enjoyed increased popularity throughout the 20th century, and even greater relevance in the 21st. Times Magazine awarded it "Best Design of the 20th Century" in 1999.
Our Plywood Lounge Chair with Wood Legs is based on Charles & Ray's original, which debuted over half-a-century ago, and stays true to the production techniques they pioneered. Like the original, it is constructed of layered bent Plywood. Improving upon it, it is available in various high quality, American FSC-certified wood veneers, making it an eco-friendly choice with authentic mid-century styling. Its solid construction provides outstanding durability, and hence, an exceptional value for any mid-century or modern living space.
