Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian Sofa Table
Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was America's pioneer of modern architecture, whose influence on European modernists and generations of US architects has been incalculable. He broke with Victorian tradition about 1900 to create the Prairie Style, the origin of millions of modern American house designs. He brought Organic Architecture to fruition in the 1920s-30s, basing structures on natural forms and producing buildings -- like "Fallingwater" in Pennsylvania and the Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan -- that are at one with their outdoor environments. A brilliant designer of furniture, textiles, stained glass, and interior detail, he always presented his clients with a completely integrated concept, from the building itself right through to the light fixtures and the rug patterns.
Copeland Furniture is the exclusive licensee of Wright's furniture designs. Each piece of Frank Lloyd Wright® Furniture by Copeland is named after the house for which he designed it, and bears Wright’s signature, date of manufacture, and a unique serial number.
Wright always believed top quality design should be available to the middle class, and the Usonian Sofa Table was part of his concentrated effort after WW2 to realize that idea. "Usonian" is a 19th century term for people and things from the United States -- U
tates of N
orth America, since "American" could apply to the whole Western Hemisphere -- and Wright adopted it for this family of house and furnishing designs and his concept of community.
Wright created the very first "open plan" house, a concept he continued in his Usonian home designs: aware that openness means the backs of furniture are as visible the fronts, he optimized the expanse presented by the rear of a sofa with this handsome, highly useful modern sofa table. The rear uprights of the modern console table are turned to parallel the sofa-back and present a strong architectural appearance, while the front supports are turned to provide maximum usable space for top and lower shelves. The Usonian Sofa Table is 58.5" on the long dimension, and is entirely of hardwood, constructed using expert joinery techniques in cherry, available in a choice of finishes.
