Frank Lloyd Wright Dana-Thomas Side Chair
Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was America's pioneer of modern architecture, whose influence on European modernists and generations of US architects has been incalculable. He broke with Victorian tradition about 1900 to create the Prairie Style, the origin of millions of modern American house designs. He brought Organic Architecture to fruition in the 1920s-30s, basing structures on natural forms and producing buildings -- like "Fallingwater" in Pennsylvania and the Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan -- that are at one with their outdoor environments. A brilliant designer of furniture, textiles, stained glass, and interior detail, he always presented his clients with a completely integrated concept, from the building itself right through to the light fixtures and the rug patterns.
Copeland Furniture is the exclusive licensee of Wright's furniture designs. Each piece of Frank Lloyd Wright® Furniture by Copeland is named after the house for which he designed it, and bears Wright’s signature, date of manufacture, and a unique serial number.
Strong and refined, the Dana-Thomas Side Chair is an integral part of the dining suite originally conceived by Wright for socialite Susan Dana's grand house in Illinois. The modern dining chair comes in 2 sizes (i.e. back heights), and is meant to combine with the matching Arm Chairs and Dining Table. Our photo shows Wright's original concept, to alternate the taller and shorter modern side chairs: together with the high backed arm chairs, this creates a comfortable "room within a room" atmosphere for those at the table, and a pleasing formal rhythm at the same time. The slightly slanted back verticals promote relaxation, the thick, tailored seat cushion promotes comfort. The Frank Lloyd Wright Dana-Thomas Side Chair is entirely constructed in either quartersawn oak or cherry, using fine carpentry techniques. Each wood is available in 2 different finishes, and the cushion may be ordered in either fabric or leather in a wide range of colors.
