Frank Lloyd Wright Boynton Side ChairFrank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was America's pioneer of modern architecture, whose influence on European modernists and generations of US architects has been incalculable. He broke with Victorian tradition about 1900 to create the Prairie Style, the origin of millions of modern American house designs. He brought Organic Architecture to fruition in the 1920s-30s, basing structures on natural forms and producing buildings -- like "Fallingwater" in Pennsylvania and the Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan -- that are at one with their outdoor environments. A brilliant designer of furniture, textiles, stained glass, and interior detail, he always presented his clients with a completely integrated concept, from the building itself right through to the light fixtures and the rug patterns.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Boynton Side Chair offered here, like its mate the Boynton Arm Chair, is the happy result of rediscovering a Wright idea that was never realized during his lifetime. The original chairs he designed for the Boynton House in New York state, were not built to his specifications, being constructed instead with a flat, near-vertical back plane. Copeland specialists researched the original drawings in the Wright archives, and developed a process that would allow the architect's compound-curved, contoured back to be manufactured, resulting in a timelessly modern dining chair with all the strength, elegance and comfort that it was meant to have. The Boynton Side Chair is an excellent match for the Dana-Thomas dining tables. The modern side chair is entirely constructed in hardwood, either quartersawn oak or cherry, using fine carpentry techniques and beautifully finished. The tailored cushion may be ordered in either fabric or leather in a wide range of colors.
